Does Kindred Heart Therapy Group offer affordable family therapy services in rural California?
Kindred Heart Therapy Group offers affordable family therapy services in rural California. We accept most Medi-Cal plans and provide a very low sliding scale for those in need. Our specialty lies in supporting parents who experience "fight or flight" responses due to stress and generational trauma. We utilize EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and brainspotting techniques as part of our trauma-informed care.
Our focus is on helping parents regulate their nervous systems through brain-based therapies. For children, we specialize in addressing behavioral issues and ADHD treatment. By assisting parents in achieving greater emotional regulation, we help improve their children's symptoms and behaviors. This holistic approach aims to positively impact the entire family system, leading to better outcomes for everyone in the home.
How does brainspotting therapy work?
Brainspotting is a therapeutic approach that helps access and release emotional pain and trauma by utilizing specific eye positions. The process begins with a therapist guiding you to identify a point in your vision, known as a "Brainspot," that connects to a specific memory or feeling. By maintaining focus on this spot, you bypass the thinking brain, allowing your nervous system to process and release trapped emotions. To enhance this experience, calming music is played, alternating between your ears, which facilitates deeper processing. As you concentrate on the Brainspot, your body naturally begins to let go of tension, promoting a sense of calm and grounding. This approach is particularly beneficial for individuals who feel "stuck" in traditional therapy or struggle with issues such as anxiety, PTSD, or grief.
For more information review our Brainspotting page in "Our Services" on our website.
Do you offer grief support groups?
While Kindred Heart Therapy Group provides specialized individual grief counseling, we typically refer our clients seeking a group setting to the wonderful team at Foothills Compassionate Care (formerly Hospice of the Foothills). Based in Nevada City, they offer free peer-based grief support groups that are open to the entire community, even if your loved one was not in hospice care. Their groups provide a compassionate space to connect with others who truly understand the journey of loss.

Expressive arts therapy is a therapeutic approach that uses creative modalities such as art, music, dance, and drama to help individuals explore their emotions, improve self-expression, and promote healing.
This holistic form of therapy is used to address a variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and stress management. It can also support individuals dealing with life transitions or those seeking personal growth and self-discovery. By engaging in the creative process, clients can gain insight into their feelings, enhance their coping skills, and foster emotional well-being.
What are the benefits of expressive arts therapy?
Kindred Heart Therapy Group employs expressive arts therapy (EXA), which includes music, dance, storytelling, and silence as means of self-expression. This therapeutic approach is particularly effective in reducing trauma-related symptoms through methods like movement-based sensory integration, two-handed drawing, and clay play.
Visual arts—such as drawing, painting, and photography—act as symbolic storytelling. Play techniques, especially sand tray work with miniatures, also convey narratives. Various forms of dramatic expression, including role play and improvisation, further facilitate communication through movement, sound, and imagery. Additionally, body language and gestures tell stories at a sensory level.

We also use writing exercises, such as writing letters to the deceased or maintaining a grief journal, to help articulate feelings and reflect on the loss.
